FAQ'S
Whether you can claim travel costs through the NDIS depends on the level of disability you are living with and the type of activity you are travelling to.
Travel to and from essential appointments or to approved services that form part of your ongoing care can often be claimed under your general funding budget.
Travel to and from a place of employment, day programs, study location or similar may also be claimable under certain circumstances and are subject to differing maximum claim amounts.
If it is deemed that your disability does not prohibit you from utilising public transport you may not be eligible to have your travel costs covered.
Yes. If your core budget includes general transport allowances without a support worker present then travel involving an Uber or taxi may be covered by this funding.
Again, this allowance is not available for every NDIS participant and is subject to an assessment of the individual needs of the participant. There can be annual limitations on this funding subject to the activity the travel was associated with.
There are three tiers of NDIS travel and transport benefits available to eligible participants. As of April 2023, the allowable benefits are as follows:
Level One – Up to $1606 annually for participants seeking to enhance their community access.
Level Two – Up to $2472 annually for participants who are studying or working part-time or participating in day programs, social activities, recreational or leisure activities.
Level Three – Up to $3456 per year for those working, looking for work or studying at least 15 hours a week. For participants to be eligible for this tier they must be unable to utilise public transport due to their disability.
There are exceptions to this as each participant’s needs are unique and funding is determined on an individual needs basis.
No, if you are receiving NDIS funding in line with your disability and associated transport needs you will be unable to claim a mobility allowance.
If you are having difficulties navigating travel under your current NDIS plan, we encourage you to speak with our team. At HealSoul, we offer a free consultation to help you determine your needs and better understand what support is available to you via the NDIS.
To claim back the costs of your travel, you will need to provide proof of payment in the form of a receipt to your plan manager. If self-managed you can claim reimbursement via the MyPlace portal and enter a payment request.
You need to provide the date of the service, the payment amount and the support budget in your NDIS plan that you wish to withdraw the funds from. In most instances, these payment requests are processed within 24 to 48 hours and the funds are deposited into your nominated account.
