Community engagement is essential to every person. It’s how we feel engaged with the world around us. Social participation is how we learn new things, how we come to understand others, and how we make new friends.

Community participation also gives you the tools you need to be a more independent person. You can learn new skills, both social and tactile, that can help you become a more well-rounded person. Better yet, you can enjoy yourself while you learn these skills!

We look forward to hearing about how you want to participate in the community at a free consultation.

Here are some examples of activities:

  • Working through a developmental course
  • Joining a social gardening group

FAQ'S

Social and community participation is one of the support categories under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). It is designed to provide participants with the necessary assistance and support to participate in social and community activities, leading to improved social outcomes.

The NDIS funds participation in certain community groups and events if the scheme deems that this participation will be beneficial to a person’s overall wellbeing and independence.

Community participation and social inclusion refer to the involvement of individuals in various community activities, events, and groups. It involves having opportunities to participate in various social activities that promote community connections, relationships, and meaningful interactions with others.

Sometimes, people with disabilities can feel left out or marginalised from community and social situations. While efforts may have been made to make everyone feel included, sometimes things are missed. Community participation and social inclusion aim to bridge this gap between people living with disabilities and the wider community.

Examples of increased social and community participation include participating in community events, joining community groups or clubs, volunteering, attending courses or workshops, and engaging in recreational activities such as sports, hobbies, and cultural events.

The NDIS seeks to foster independence by letting participants choose what they want to do with their time. Participants can select from a range of social groups and activities as long as they conform to NDIS standards and genuinely promote independence and social development.

Community participation involves various activities that enable individuals to connect with their communities, build relationships, and contribute to society. These activities can include social events, sports, volunteering, employment, and cultural activities.

For example, a participant might want to join a film or book club and attend once a fortnight. Other activities can include going away to holiday camps for a time, or engaging with other like-minded people in a safe and supported setting.

The NDIS provides participants with funding and support to access various community participation activities, including assistance with transportation, social skills development, and other practical support.

The scheme also provides participants with access to community networks and services, helping them to connect with others and find opportunities to participate in community activities.

The primary goal of community participation is to promote social inclusion, independence, and overall well-being. It aims to provide individuals with the opportunity to connect with others, engage in meaningful activities, and contribute to their communities, leading to increased self-esteem, confidence, and overall quality of life.

When people learn to more openly interact with the world around them, their independence naturally increases. They become more comfortable approaching others, starting conversations, and speaking about their needs. This allows them to dictate their own support as they grow and develop.
