The NDIS community nursing program is intended to teach individuals a variety of skills related to their health that then empowers them to manage their own care.
Participants work alongside disability support workers and allied healthcare professionals to learn essential skills related to their personal care. This serves to enhance the independence and confidence of participants for enhanced quality of life.
Community nurses are also key to supporting parents of children with complex medical needs to learn the necessary skills to manage their care at home independently.
Community nurses accessed through the NDIS are all about supporting you to take care of yourself or relearn ways to manage your personal care needs. They also teach parents of dependents living with disabilities to independently manage many of their everyday care needs.
With a view to supporting you to live more independently, community nurses will assist you with undertaking tasks such as:
- Administering medication correctly and at the right doses
- Caring for wounds
- Showering independently
- Getting dressed
- Complex bowel care
- Administering subcutaneous injections
- Tracheostomy management
- Urinary catheter management
- Nasogastric tube feeding and management and more.
Your care program is entirely tailored to your needs and delivered at a pace that suits you. Your care is done in alignment with your medical practitioner’s guidance and regularly monitored and reviewed to evaluate your progress.
Community nursing can also involve short and long-term in-home nursing care as respite or ongoing support where medically necessary.
An example of community nursing could include an individual with an acquired injury that has led to a permanent disability. For an individual who has become paraplegic, there will be significant changes in how they manage their personal care and medical requirements.
Community nurses support individuals to relearn skills linked to their personal care and how to manage their medical needs. Their focus is not only on increasing autonomy but ensuring proper cleanliness and management of medications for optimal health outcomes.
For parents of children with ongoing complex medical needs, community nurses support them to learn the necessary aspects of everyday care. This empowers parents to feel confident in caring for their child’s needs.

For patients older than 65, the NDIS does not offer early intervention funding. In these instances, patients will be referred to disability support or aged care support for assistance.
