The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is one of the most significant advancements for people living with a disability in the history of the country. At the very core of the scheme is the desire to assist all participants in finding more support as they develop their own sense of independence.
People living with a disability are entitled to the same freedom and quality of life as those without. The NDIS provides the opportunity for people to live an ‘ordinary life’ by giving them more control over the support they receive.
If you’re looking to access the scheme on your terms, then contact HealSoul. As a qualified disability support provider under the NDIS, we can assist you as you access supports under the scheme, giving you access to quality community, group, and at-home supports to increase your independence.
In this article, we’ll take a look at the NDIS, how it works, and how participants can access better supports. If you have any questions about the content covered in this piece, get in touch with our team. They’d be happy to talk you through any queries or concerns that you might have.
What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the Australian Government’s insurance scheme for people with a disability. The NDIS provides financial support to eligible Australians who have a permanent and significant disability that affects their ability to take part in everyday activities. The NDIS also provides support for families and carers of people with a disability.
The NDIS is a needs-based system that provides funding for supports and services to eligible people with a permanent and significant disability. The NDIS does not cover all disabilities, but only those that have a major impact on a person’s ability to take part in everyday activities.
How does the NDIS work?
The NDIS works by providing financial support to eligible Australians who have a permanent and significant disability that affects their ability to take part in everyday activities. The NDIS also provides support for families and carers of people with a disability.
To be eligible for the NDIS, you must:
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen with a special category visa
- Be aged under 65 years (over 65s have other supports available)
- Have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities
Your disability must be:
- Verified by an accredited health professional, and
- Expected to last for at least two years
To access the NDIS, you will need to contact your state or territory government to arrange an assessment. Once you have been assessed as eligible for the NDIS, you will be able to access the supports and services you need.
What if I’m not eligible for the NDIS?
If you’re not eligible for the NDIS, you may still be able to access some supports and services through your state or territory government. You can also contact disability support organisations in your community for information about the supports and services that are available to you.
What supports and services does the NDIS provide?
The NDIS provides a range of supports and services to eligible Australians. These include:
- Assistance with daily living tasks
- Aids and equipment
- Community participation activities
- Early childhood education and support
- Employment assistance
- Therapy services
The exact services that you’ll access will be relevant to your situation. No one’s NDIS care plan is the same. Individuals are entitled to the support they need to become more active and engaged members of the community.
How is the NDIS funded?
The NDIS is funded by a combination of the Australian Government, state and territory governments.
The Australian Government provides the majority of funding for the NDIS. This funding is provided through a mix of taxation revenue and Commonwealth grants to state and territory governments.
State and territory governments also contribute to the funding of the NDIS. These contributions are generally made through existing disability services budgets.
The Scheme is also funded in part by the NDIS Levy. NDIS Levy is a 0.5% tax on taxable incomes above $87,000 that was introduced in July 2014.
Is the NDIS available all over Australia?
The NDIS is available to eligible people with a disability who live in a participating state or territory.
The NDIS is currently being rolled out across Australia. At the time of writing, the Scheme is now fully operational in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia. The NDIS was made available in the Northern Territory from 1 July 2019, and in the Australian Capital Territory from 1 July 2020.
What if I move to a different state or territory?
If you move to a different state or territory, your NDIS support will continue for up to six months. After this time, you will need to contact the NDIA to arrange an assessment of your needs.
